Alumna, volunteer memorialized by City of San Marcos

Gwen Smith, a Texas State University alumna and a lifelong volunteer, has been memorialized by the City of San Marcos for her efforts to improve the lives of her fellow citizens.
The Gwen K. Smith Fountain, erected by the Heritage Association of San Marcos and the River Walk Park Committee, was dedicated Friday, March 18, in Veramendi Plaza’s Memorial Grove in San Marcos. Association members also added a memorial plaque to a live oak tree planted near the fountain in Smith’s honor.
Smith was born in San Marcos in 1915. She earned two degrees from Texas State and taught in San Marcos CISD as a young graduate. She then was a professor at Illinois State University for 33 years before retiring to San Marcos, where she was an active volunteer and civic leader until her death in 2010.
