Carifio rescues high school music program

Alexia Carifio, a graduate of the music education master’s program at Texas State University-San Marcos, is working to safeguard music education.

Carifio, the band director at San Luis High School in San Luis, Arizona, said the school was on the verge of canceling its music education program when she was hired in 2007.

This year, for the first time in the school’s history, the SLHS band qualified for the Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association State Concert Festival.

“I feel so vindicated as an educator,” Carifio told a reporter for the Yuma Sun.
